BROADENING PARTICIPATION IN COMPUTING

Superconductor electronics hasn't had its breakout moment yet, let's shape the field.

DISCoVER is a seven-university collaboration built on the belief that better hardware comes from a wider range of people building it. We open our research, mentorship, and community to undergraduates, graduate students and postdocs, faculty, and anyone curious about the future of computing.

What We're Building Toward

Five commitments that guide how DISCoVER works, not just what it researches.

01

Bridge the Full Technology Stack

DISCoVER brings together devices, circuits, architecture, and applications across seven universities. That cross-layer coordination helps research findings become useful inputs for the engineering decisions that determine whether a new technology can scale.

02

Collaborative Research Advancements

Tools, methods, and findings are shared openly across our seven partner institutions and beyond, so people outside the immediate collaboration can build on the work.

03

Connect Academic Research with Industry

DISCoVER creates opportunities to shape joint research directions with colleagues across academia and industry, while industry-facing seminars and collaborations give the field a place to discuss emerging architectures, systems, and applications.

04

Modern Needs

By connecting fundamental superconductor electronics to computing applications and technology-development conversations, DISCoVER keeps an eye on the gap between an interesting device and a useful computing platform.

Ways to Get Involved

Whatever stage you're at, there's a way in.

Undergraduate Students

  • Paid research experiences in DISCoVER labs, including through partnerships with existing NSF REU programs
  • Introductory CS coursework redesigned to build confidence and community regardless of background
  • Joint majors pairing CS with fields like biology or business
  • The annual DISCoVER Undergraduate BPC Conference, where past participants share their experience with the next cohort

Graduate Students & Postdocs

  • New M.S. Research Scholars pathways encouraging students from underserved communities toward doctoral study
  • Direct mentoring on academic careers, including workshops for underrepresented senior graduate students
  • The annual DISCoVER Graduate (and Beyond) BPC Conference for sharing ideas across institutions
  • A structured pipeline into postdoctoral and early-career faculty roles

Faculty

  • Cross-institutional collaboration spanning devices, circuits, architecture, and applications across seven universities
  • Kickoff and year-three workshops to shape joint research directions with colleagues across academia and industry
  • Opportunities to mentor early-career faculty and expand the pipeline to the professoriate
  • Access to shared tools, datasets, and open-source research infrastructure

Where Industry Connects

DISCoVER's impact is strongest when research, engineering, and application questions meet early.

Technology & Semiconductor

  • Research spanning devices, circuits, and architectures relevant to post-CMOS computing
  • Shared tools and open research infrastructure that make technical work easier to evaluate and extend
  • Cross-institutional collaboration that connects fundamental research to engineering questions

Computing & Systems

  • Work connecting device behavior to circuits, architecture, and computing applications
  • Technical conversations that surface the system-level constraints that matter for adoption
  • Seminars that bring researchers and practitioners into the same discussion

Future Builders

  • Students, postdocs, and faculty developing the skills needed to sustain the field
  • Mentorship and cross-institutional collaboration that broaden the technical talent pool
  • Career pathways that keep expertise moving between research and practice
OPEN TO EVERYONE

Everyone Has Value.

Superconductor electronics will shape how AI, medicine, and climate science scale in the next decade. We think that's worth explaining clearly, not just publishing quietly — so a meaningful part of DISCoVER's work is making the research legible to anyone who's curious.

Browse the Media Hub

Monthly public seminar series

Hosted by Prof. Roman Sobolewski, open to students, faculty, and anyone with an interest in superconductor electronics — no lab affiliation required.

Social media & "Ask an Engineer"

An ongoing initiative connecting the public with our researchers to answer questions about computing, engineering, and what it's like to work in the field.

Open publications & open-source tools

Research findings and select design tools are shared openly, so people outside the collaboration can learn from and build on the work.
